Iain Richardson, Director

Professor Iain Richardson is an internationally known expert on the MPEG and H.264 video compression standards. Based in Aberdeen, Scotland, he frequently travels to the US and Europe.

He is the author of "H.264 and MPEG-4 Video Compression", a widely cited work in the research literature. Professor Richardson has written three further books and over 50 journal and conference papers on video compression. He regularly advises companies on video compression technology, video coding patents and mergers/acquisitions in the video coding industry. Professor Richardson leads an internationally renowned video coding research team, contributes to the MPEG industry standards group and is sought after as an expert witness.

Maja Bystrom, Senior Consultant

Dr Maja Bystrom received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1997 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. From 1997-2002 she was an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University and from 2002-2009 she was an Associate Professor at Boston University. In 1999 she received an National Science Foundation CAREER award and in 2001 a Fulbright Award. Formerly Associate Editor for Signal Processing Letters, she is a member of the IEEE Expert Now Editorial Board and an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. Her technical interests lie in the areas of multimedia communications, reconfigurable systems, and
multidimensional data processing. She is an experienced expert witness, from expert reports through deposition testimony and trial testimony. Dr Bystrom is based in Boston, MA.

Yafan Zhao, Senior Consultant

Dr Zhao received her PhD in video coding at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK in 2003. Since then, she has worked as a researcher and consultant in the area of video compression and communications. She is the author of many research publications, including papers in leading technical journals and patent applications. She is a regular reviewer for IEEE transactions on Circus and System for Video Technology and Signal processing: Image communications. Her expertise includes video coding standards, algorithms and software design of video CODECs as well as coding algorithms and system performance analysis and evaluation. She has worked with leading companies in the video coding industry.  

Sampath Kannangara, Senior Consultant

Dr. Sampath Kannangara is an experienced researcher, developer and consultant in video coding. He has published over twenty research articles in prestigious journals, conferences and industry standard contributions. His technical interests and expertise lie in the areas of video compression algorithm development, platform specific video codec optimisation (multi-core platforms, reconfigurable systems), multimedia networks and video communications software development. He is also an experienced consultant in standards based codec implementations such as H.264/AVC and SVC. Dr Kannangara is based in Aberdeen, Scotland.
